Programme Overview
Domestic Requirements
Students under this programme are initially enrolled in the Master of
Science stage of the programme, with a duration of Programme. After
twelve (12) calendar months, ran in three (3) sessions of four (months) each.
A successful completion of this stage, with passes in all taught courses and
submission of a short dissertation will lead to the award of, students who
pass all the required courses will be awarded a Master of Science degree in
Development Planning and Management. Those who obtain CWA of 70%
or more at the end of the first year, may progress as MPhil Development
Planning and Management candidates for the second year, of another twelve
(12) calendar months. Such candidates would spend the academic year
writing their theses and will be expected to complete the programme by the
end of the second year.
The MSc/MPhil. Development Studies is opened to Planners, Managers,
Administrators and other professionals. Applicants must have a bachelor’s
degree in the Second-Class Division and above or its equivalent from
recognized institutions in the following programmes: Planning,
Development Studies, Integrated Development Studies, Geography,
Environmental Studies, Social Studies, Sociology, Land Economy,
Agriculture, Renewable Natural Resources, Economics, Civil
Engineering, Business and Public Administration or other relevant
programmes.
Applicants with post-graduation experience in industry or research may
have an added advantage. All applicants must pass selection interviews
before gaining admission. Students enrolled in the MSc Urban Management
Studies programme are required to pay WEEKEND fee approved by the
University.NB: DIRECT ADMISSION INTO 2-YEAR MPHIL PROGRAMMES
The Department Board may grant direct admission into 2-year MPhil
degrees in all the programmes listed under A above, if the following
admission requirements are met:
a. Applicant meets all the entry requirements stated under the programme of
choice (as listed under A above).
b. An applicant with First-Class (Hons) or a good Second-Class (Upper
Division) from a recognised institution; and had undertaken individual
undergraduate research, in partial fulfilment of his/her Bachelor’s degree
may be considered for a direct entry into a 2-Year MPhil programme.
c. Applicant presents an excellent research proposal and defends same at the
selection interview – At the interview these group of applicants will be
intensively engaged on the focus of their proposed research and intended
contribution(s) to knowledge. Applicants must show considerable
knowledge and experience in their proposed/chosen research. In addition,
applicants must proof themselves to be all-round candidates, who can
complete their taught courses and research in the 2-years allowed.
d. Area(s) of proposed research fits into the Department’s research agenda
and supervisor can be assigned – At the selection interview, the relevance
of the proposed research to the Department’s broad research agenda will
be determined [Please see the Department’s website for details of research
themes]. An applicant with a well-written and excellently delivered
research proposal will be considered for a direct entry into a 2-year MPhil
degree in his/her programme of choice, as listed under A above.
